Though this post goes up days after I’m back in Nairobi, I’m actually writing it while seated at Terminal 4, Adolfo Suarez International Airport Madrid, Spain, Free Wi-Fi , Catching up on Empire and looking at the Spanish landscape that grace the airport and I’m feeling all sorts of Inspirations as I’m just a few hours to board my flight home.
It’s been a year since I was in Madrid, (You can read about my first visit here ) and it always feels like I have never been here. Madrid, the heart of Spain, is one of those cities in the world that offers you a lot of everything at once.
So who goes on a Holiday at the end of February as winter is transitioning into spring, well you got that right, me! I love holidays when no one else is on them, because for starters, you enjoy affordable rates in terms of hotels and flights plus most places are rarely crowded. So you get to enjoy your holidays without having to run into the same people you left back home.
Sorry guys, sounding a bit mean, but that’s what holidays are made of. Time to unwind, relax, sleep in late, and shop. Yes shop and Madrid has to be the it place for shopping.
While the rest of you all say its Dubai or Bangkok well, I disagree with you, Madrid has it all put together. From the high end store and designer to the most affordable like and let the euro sign not lie to you when converted to the shilling its affordable compared to what we settle for when they are brought in the country.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for supporting the Kenyan Brand and all but when it comes to international brands the rule is either import them or you can as well wait till you travel because I really don’t see the point of buying Zara, Mango, H&M or all those brands that we so much love at almost four times the original price. That’s just a rip off.
One thing that overwhelms me about Spain, is the culture richness. As you go around shopping you will enjoy beautiful pieces of art, and buildings which are well arranged and almost each one of them has an interesting story behind it. One of my current favorite places is Museo de Nacional which translates to the National Museum. The place contains priceless works of art belonging to the Spanish royal houses dating back to 1600 or so.
You can be sure that the churches will also blow your mind away with their paintings and History. It’s amazing how I spent so much time in church just admiring the art and creativity of different works from very different painters.
The pieces which were donated to the government by the King, tells you a history about Europe and the events that took place to create what we see today. You even get to see a personal collection of king which is quite interesting.
Just a few Kilometers away you get to meet 3 cities not as big as Madrid of course but as breathtaking. I’m talking about Toledo and Segovia not forgetting Badajoz which is in the northern part of Madrid with some of the most beautiful beaches as you head towards Portugal. Something quite interesting, you get to see some of the locations that were used in Game of thrones season 4, 5 and the upcoming season 6.
I’m not so big on food experimenting but this time I was open. If you are a foreigner in Spain, you can’t help but enjoy the Spanish Tapas and if you are a wine lover, well this Spaniards have some of the very best wine. Lamb, Pork and Ham are what’s up and definitely sea food.
I was curious about the Market and Fish Spaghetti which I had to try. Spaniards are big on food and eating is like a ceremony. We could spend 4 hours in a restaurant just eating, drinking and chatting and that’s on a daily basis. Their food culture is definitely one that will interest you and before you know it you have sampled close to 7 different dishes.
I’m still excited to go back to Madrid which should be soon and this time Barcelona and Portugal are on the list. In the meantime let me get my Spanish game in check by learning Spanish as Language barrier can be such a comfort but at least I can hear a bit, ( and naeza omba maji) which literary means I can borrow water.
Love and love.
